2021 Youth Leadership Scholarship

Southwest Electric participates with other electric cooperatives in Mississippi in an annual Youth Leadership Program designed for high school juniors.  We are dedicated to helping the students in our communities.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program events were cancelled for the 2020-2021 school year.  In lieu of the program, Southwest Electric is offering four $2,500 scholarships to students who are seniors in high school during the 2021-2022 school year.

Criteria for Selection

Applicants must:

  • be seniors in high school in the 2021-2022 school year
  • reside with a parent or guardian who is a Southwest Electric Member
  • participate in school and extracurricular activities
  • be active in community, civic or church activities outside of the school setting

Application Process

Applicants must submit the application and a 30-second video telling us why you should receive the scholarship.  A resumé can be attached if additional space is needed to list any information required on the application.

The deadline to submit the application and video is __________ at 4:30 p.m.  Entries must be emailed to Jeremy Smith at jsmith@swepa.coop.

Selection Process

Applications and videos will be reviewed by a panel of judges.  The judges will be representatives of other electric cooperatives in order to maintain impartiality.  The top eight entries will chosen for an interview.  Interviews by the same judges will be conducted at our Lorman office on a date selected in September 2021.  The judges will choose the four recipients of the $2,500 scholarships.

The scholarship will be mailed to the student in the form of a check before the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
